Bid farewell to Cape Town as you begin one of South Africa's most celebrated road journeys. Following the rugged coastline eastward, your first stop is the charming seaside town of Hermanus, internationally renowned as one of the best land-based whale watching destinations on Earth. Southern right whales are frequently spotted in Walker Bay between July and November, though you may still spot dolphins and Cape fur seals year-round. Continuing along the N2, you wind through the Overberg region and the Outeniqua Pass before arriving in beautiful Knysna, nestled beside its famous lagoon.

A day of extraordinary natural adventure awaits. Your morning takes you into the ancient Tsitsikamma Forest for an exhilarating canopy tour — gliding between platforms high in the forest canopy, the ocean glittering below. You'll also experience the famous Storms River suspension bridge, swaying gently over the turbulent gorge where the river meets the Indian Ocean. After lunch, return to Knysna for a leisurely boat cruise through the famous Knysna Heads — towering sandstone cliffs that frame the lagoon's dramatic entrance. Most nationals receive a 90-day visa on arrival. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 30 days beyond your return date and has at least 2 blank pages. Check requirements for your specific nationality with your embassy.
The South African Rand (ZAR) is the local currency. Major credit cards are accepted at hotels and restaurants. We recommend carrying some cash for gratuities and smaller purchases. ATMs are widely available at airports and in towns.
Tipping is customary and appreciated. Restaurant: 10–15%. Game rangers and trackers: R100–200 per person per day. Transfers: R20–50. Safari lodge staff: R150–200 per person per day (pool system).
Late March / early April is excellent timing. Cape Town experiences warm autumn days (20–25°C). The Garden Route is mild and green. Kruger will be warm to hot (28–36°C) with lower vegetation, making wildlife spotting superb.
Neutral-coloured clothing for safari (khaki, olive, tan). Light layers for cool mornings. Smart-casual for lodge dinners. Sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen, and insect repellent are essential for Kruger. Comfortable walking shoes.
The Kruger area is a malaria risk zone. Consult your GP about prophylactics at least 6 weeks before travel. Tap water is safe to drink in Cape Town. Comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is strongly recommended.
